Shoulder Impingement Treatment in Orangeburg, NY

Targeted acupuncture care for rotator cuff pain, overhead pain, and frozen range of motion — without injections or surgery.

Shoulder impingement can make simple things painful — reaching for a shelf, sleeping on your side, or putting on a jacket. Most patients come to us after weeks of rest that didn't help, or after being told to try physical therapy or cortisone. At Orangetown Acupuncture, we take a different approach: we identify the specific muscle imbalances and movement patterns driving your impingement and treat them directly.

What's actually happening in your shoulder

Shoulder impingement occurs when the rotator cuff tendons get pinched beneath the acromion — often because the scapula isn't moving correctly, not because the tendons themselves are torn. Weak serratus anterior and lower trapezius muscles, combined with a tight pectoralis minor, disrupt the normal coordination between your upper arm and shoulder blade (scapulohumeral rhythm). The result: the acromion doesn't rotate out of the way during arm elevation, and compression builds with every overhead movement.

This is why impingement frequently doesn't show on MRI — the problem is functional, not structural. And it's why rest alone rarely resolves it.

How we treat it

  • Acupuncture and motor point needling targets the specific muscles contributing to your impingement — releasing overactive muscles like the upper trapezius and pectoralis minor, and reactivating inhibited stabilizers like the serratus anterior and lower trapezius. Needling directly into motor points restores normal neuromuscular signaling and reduces the protective tension that limits your range of motion.

  • Electroacupuncture adds gentle electrical stimulation to the needles to accelerate tissue healing, reduce inflammation in the bursa and tendon sheaths, and improve blood flow to the subacromial space — an area that is naturally slow to heal due to limited circulation.

  • Corrective movement guidance — we assess your posture and scapular mechanics during the first visit and give you specific exercises to reinforce the changes made in treatment. Without this component, gains from needling tend to be short-lived in postural or occupational cases.

What to expect

  • Your first session runs 45–60 minutes. We assess your shoulder range of motion, posture, and movement patterns before any needling begins. Most patients notice meaningful improvement in pain and mobility within 4–6 sessions. Chronic cases — particularly those with long-standing postural habits or prior injury — typically require 8–12 weeks of care.

  • We see patients from Orangeburg, Tappan, Nyack, Blauvelt, Pearl River, and across Rockland County and Bergen County, NJ.
